FOOTBALL

Football

During the unofficial Christmas truce of 1914, somewhere near Ypres, Belgium, a football match was held in no mans land between soldiers of the British and German armies. There are also many other accounts of footballs being kicked by soldiers as they went ‘over the top’ and advanced toward the German front line, most famously during the first day of the Battle of the Somme – the worst day in British military history.

We would like to pay homage to those who took part in these bizarre incidents by hosting at least one game, preferably between a team of amateurs from Macclesfield, and one from Eckernforde, with another match between military veterans from both countries.

Obviously, this will need a massive amount of organisation and planning, but we believe it is feasible.

If this is something you can help to arrange, and/or take part in, we’ll be more than happy to hear from you.
